OSAKA (TR) – An 87-year-old man on death row for a double murder case more than four decades ago has died at the Osaka Detention House, reports the Mainichi Broadcasting System (Mar. 3).
The Osaka Detention House announced on Tuesday that Seijiro Yamano died due to multiple organ failure.
According to the detention house, Yamano complained of abdominal pain after breakfast on Monday. He was subsequently put under observation.
However, it was determined later that day that he was likely suffering from an intestinal obstruction. He was then transported to an outside hospital.
He was confirmed dead at around 2:00 p.m. due to multiple organ failure.
The director of the Osaka Detention House commented, “We will continue to strive to provide appropriate health management for our inmates.”
Yamano is a former real estate executive. He was convicted of robbery-murder and abandoning a corpse in the murder of two business partners in 1982.
Yamano had been held at the Osaka Detention House for approximately 43 years, including his pretrial detention period.
With the death of Yamano, the total number of death row inmates nationwide now stands at 102.
