KAGOSHIMA (TR) – Kagoshima Prefectural Police have arrested a 75-year-old man for allegedly assaulting a woman with a shakuhachi, a traditional Japanese bamboo flute, reports TV Asahi (Sep. 25).
The suspect, a company employee residing in Ibusuki City, is accused of brutally striking the victim, an acquaintance in her 60s, on her back and legs. Investigators believe the man rained down blows on the woman more than a dozen times using the heavy bamboo instrument.
The incident came to light after the battered woman managed to contact the authorities.
Upon his arrest, the suspect fully admitted to the allegations. “There is no mistake that I used violence,” he was quoted as telling investigators.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the dispute and exactly how the traditional musical instrument became a weapon of assault.
