GIFU (TR) – Police in Kakamigahara City have arrested a 25-year-old man after he allegedly threw his two young daughters from the balcony of his sixth-floor apartment during a standoff with officers, reports TV Asahi (Sep. 28).
Tomokazu Miura, a part-time worker, is accused of dropping the girls, aged 4 and 1, early on the morning of September 26. Miraculously, both children survived without life-threatening injuries after landing safely on a specialized rescue mat deployed by emergency services below.
The incident unfolded at approximately 4:20 a.m. after Miura’s wife dialed police, telling police, “My husband grabbed my arm.”
When officers arrived at the scene, Miura was standing alone on the balcony of his residence and refused to comply with police instructions. According to investigative sources, as officers moved to physically breach the apartment, Miura retrieved his sleeping daughters, carried them to the balcony, and threw them over the edge.
Chaotic scene
Witnesses described a chaotic scene in the early morning hours.
“The man was talking normally at first, but then his speech became aggressive. There was a lot of yelling from a crowd of people, and then a loud ‘thud’—like something had fallen,” one neighbor recalled.
Another bystander witnessed the immediate aftermath. “I heard someone yell, ‘Put the 1-year-old in the ambulance first,’ and the paramedics rushed to load them in,” the witness said.
Residents indicate this is not the first time police have been called to the apartment. “I think they moved in around April. This is the second time there’s been a disturbance,” a neighbor told reporters.
Upon his arrest on suspicion of attempted murder, Miura tested negative for illegal drugs. He is currently exercising his right to remain silent during police interrogation.
Investigators believe the incident stems from an ongoing domestic dispute between the couple and are continuing to look into the events leading up to the near-fatal fall.
