FUKUOKA (TR) – Fukuoka Prefectural Police have arrested a 75-year-old man after he allegedly struck a Nakama City assemblyman with what appears to have been a pistol on Tuesday, reports Nippon News Network (Mar. 1).

At approximately 10:30 a.m., Yukio Okamoto repeatedly hit Kazuhiko Yonemitsu, a 74-year-old Liberal Democratic Party member, in the face and head with the gun inside a parking garage for the city’s municipal office.

The assemblyman was transported to a nearby hospital where is he is being treated for minor wounds to his head.

Okamoto, who has been charged with attempted murder, has declined to explain his actions.

The incident occurred immediately after Yonemitsu departed a plenary session for the city assembly. After the attack, Okamoto was apprehended by two city employees.

Yonemitsu is currently serving his sixth term for a district in Toritani.
