CHIBA (TR) – A court here has handed down suspended prison terms to a medical student and a former intern over the alleged gang rape of an intoxicated woman inside a restaurant bathroom, reports Nippon News Network (Mar. 30).
The Chiba District Court handed Mineto Masuda, 23, a fifth-year student at the Chiba University Graduate School of Medicine, a three-year sentence, suspended for five years in the gang-rape of the woman, aged in her 20s, in the toilet of a restaurant in Chiba City’s Chuo Ward on September 20, 2016.
The incident took place during a party at the restaurant. After the event, Masuda took the victim to his residence where she was raped again. He had been accused of rape resulting in injury.
Presiding Judge Noriaki Yoshimura said that the defendant “assaulted the victim when she was in a condition that left her unable to resist.” The judge added, however, that his actions were not premeditated and he has shown remorse. “Compensation is being made,” the judge said.
Meanwhile, the court handed Yuji Fujisaka, a 30-year-old former medical intern at the same school, a two-year prison term, suspended for three years, for quasi-indecent assault in the case. He had been accused of inappropriately touching the victim.
The prosecution had sought a four-year term for Masuda and two years for Fujisaka.
Two other fifth-year students, Masaya Yoshimoto and Kensuke Yamada, both 23, are still on trial for gang rape in the case.
