10 kilograms of gold snatched from parked car while driver eats lunch in Tokyo

TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police are investigating a brazen smash-and-grab in Taito Ward after approximately 10 kilograms of gold and other valuables were stolen from a parked vehicle while the driver was on his lunch break, reports Nippon News Network (July 16).

According to police, an emergency call was placed just before 1:00 p.m. on Thursday. A man reported to the dispatcher that his car window had been shattered and precious metals left inside had vanished.

The victim, an employee of a precious metal collection and processing company, was in the middle of his daily route when the theft occurred. He told police he had parked his vehicle in a coin-operated lot in Taito to grab a quick lunch, only to return and discover the broken window.

The stolen haul includes two solid gold ornaments weighing a combined 10 kilograms, as well as a large quantity of rings and other jewelry.

Tokyo police are currently reviewing security footage in the area and pursuing the case as a grand theft.
