SAITAMA (TR) – Saitama Prefectural Police have arrested a 21-year-old Japanese language student from Myanmar after a newborn baby was found inside her apartment, reports TBS News (Aug. 29).
Tha Tha Nwe is accused of leaving the infant’s body in a room of her residence in the Izumi-cho area of Higashimatsuyama City between August 16 and 28.
The discovery was triggered by a tip-off from a local gynecologist two days prior. According to police, the doctor contacted authorities to report, “A pregnant woman visited the clinic, but a fetus could no longer be confirmed in her abdomen.”
Acting on the report, officers searched Nwe’s apartment the following day and discovered the remains. The body, believed to be a baby boy, had been placed inside a plastic bag. Police noted there were no noticeable external injuries on the infant.
During questioning on suspicion of abandoning a corpse, Nwe partially denied the charges, claiming she did not mean to conceal the death.
“There is no mistake that I put the baby that came out of my stomach into a plastic bag and left it at home, but I had no intention of throwing it away or hiding it,” the suspect told investigators.
Police are currently investigating the newborn’s exact cause of death.
