Sukiya to temporarily close most outlets nationwide after cockroach found

TOKYO (TR) – Following the discovery of another pest in a dish served to a customer at a Sukiya outlet, the gyudon beef bowl chain said on Saturday that it will temporarily close most of its outlets nationwide.

According to an announcement on the Sukiya web site, a customer found a cockroach in an unspecified dish served at the Akishima Ekiminami store in the capital on Friday. Following the discovery, the customer made a call to the company to lodge a report.

The store in question voluntarily suspended operations from around 5 p.m. that same day. The cause is currently under investigation.

In addition, a professional pest control company is scheduled to carry out extermination work on March 31.

The discovery is the second of its type this year. In January, a customer found a rat in a bowl of miso soup at a Sukiya outlet in Tottori Prefecture.

In response to this situation, Sukiya will temporarily close all of its stores — the exception being those located in shopping centers — from 9:00 a.m. on March 31 to 9:00 a.m. on April 4.

During this period, the company will take measures to prevent the intrusion of pests and vermin into its outlets.
