TOKYO (TR) – A woman whose younger sister was once a top adult video (AV) actress has opened up about the agonizing secrets that fractured her family — including the disturbing moment she discovered her sister’s explicit videos saved on her own husband’s mobile phone.
In speaking to reports Nikkan Spa! (Oct. 1), Akiko Tanaka (a pseudonym for a woman in her 40s) shared the harsh reality of being the sibling of a major player in Japan’s adult entertainment industry. Roughly 15 years ago, when her sister was at the peak of her career, Tanaka was living a quiet life with her then-husband in a tight-knit rural town.
In such a “village society,” secrets were nearly impossible to keep.
“The workplace and the living area were basically one and the same. Everyone knew everyone,” Tanaka said. “Word spreads incredibly fast. People wouldn’t say it to my face, but they would ask, ‘What is your sister doing these days?’ with this vibe that proved they already knew. It was an indescribable agony.”
“Disgusting”
When her sister first debuted in the AV industry, Tanaka’s immediate reaction was one of fierce rejection. As an earnest older sister who had walked a traditional path, she found her sibling’s career choice “disgusting” and “unbelievable.”
Desperate to keep the scandalous secret from her husband and her neighbors, Tanaka drastically altered her relationship with her sister. Once close drinking buddies who frequently hosted sleepovers, Tanaka began icing her sister out, lying to her husband that they had simply lost touch.
But the facade violently crumbled when Tanaka checked her husband’s mobile phone.
“I was absolutely stunned to find my sister’s videos saved on his phone,” she recalled. “I had never told him what she did for a living, but obviously, if you see her face, you know. We both definitely knew, but neither of us said a word. It became an untouchable taboo.”
She added, “It was disturbing enough that he was watching those kinds of videos, but I was deeply shocked that he knew it was his own sister-in-law and still saved them.”
Divides among her parents
The unspoken tension lingered until the couple eventually divorced, at which point Tanaka finally confronted him about the videos, a release she described as a massive weight off her shoulders.
The secret also carved invisible divides among her parents. While her sister eventually broke down crying and confessed her career to their mother, the mother opted to hide the truth from their father to avoid a messy situation.
To this day, Tanaka does not know if her father ever figured it out. She once spotted a weekly magazine featuring her sister’s gravure modeling on his desk, but no one dared to bring it up. To protect her father’s image of his “perfect daughters,” Tanaka intentionally kept her sister away from him during her active career.
“Because we are family, there are things we absolutely cannot touch,” she explained.
Beloved aunt
More than 15 years have passed since the sister retired from the adult industry. Today, the two have fully repaired their relationship. Following Tanaka’s divorce, the sisters even lived together for a year, and the former AV actress has become a trusted confidante to Tanaka and a beloved aunt to her children.
Reflecting on the suffocating isolation of carrying such a heavy familial secret, Tanaka offered a stark warning to the public regarding women in the adult industry.
“If you ever watch a video and think, ‘Wait, is this person…?’, please do not ever ask their family members about it,” she pleaded. “Even now, I can’t talk about it with my friends, and I will probably never be able to ask my father if he knew. Sometimes, because you are family, the truth just cannot be spoken.”
