MIE (TR) – Two middle school boys have been arrested in Kameyama City after crashing and overturning a stolen car during a dramatic police chase, police said, reports TV Asahi (Aug. 20).
The incident unfolded at around 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday when a marked patrol car spotted the vehicle, which had recently been reported stolen. The teenage driver initiated a pursuit and briefly managed to shake off the pursuing officers.
However, the escape was short-lived. About eight minutes later, an unmarked police vehicle intercepted the boys on a narrow road in a residential area.
In a bid to flee, the 15-year-old driver attempted to squeeze past the unmarked police cruiser, colliding with it before throwing the stolen car into reverse.
Fleeing backward, the teen failed to navigate a curve 150 meters down the road. The vehicle slammed into a residential wall and a utility pole, with the sheer force of the impact causing the car to flip over onto the driver’s side.
Both the 15-year-old driver and his 14-year-old passenger managed to climb out of the overturned wreck under their own power through the passenger-side door. The 15-year-old sustained unspecified injuries in the crash.
Police arrested the pair on suspicion of theft. According to investigators, the boys are accused of stealing the vehicle, along with a wallet left inside, from an apartment parking lot prior to the joyride.
