TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a man who attempted to smuggle approximately 900 million yen worth of stimulants from the United States into Haneda International Airport, a seizure triggered by his own nervous behavior, reports Nippon News Network (Aug. 12).
According to police, Cody Shintaro Kaminski Katsura, arrived at the airport on August 9. He is accused of smuggling roughly 17 kilograms of kakuseizai (methamphetamine) for profit.
Police say the massive haul of stimulants was divided into 13 separate bags and brazenly stuffed directly into his suitcase without any sophisticated concealment.
His undoing came during a customs check. When an official approached him, Katsura’s hands began to visibly tremble. He then aroused further suspicion by claiming he had “forgotten” the combination code to unlock his luggage.
Suspicious customs officials subsequently opened the suitcase and discovered the contraband, leading to his arrest.
During police questioning, Katsura denied the allegations. However, police continuing its investigation, suspecting that a large-scale international drug smuggling syndicate is behind the operation.
