Repeat offender arrested over ‘sushi terrorism’ video at Saitama restaurant

SAITAMA (TR) — Saitama Prefectural Police have arrested a 43-year-old man after he posted a video on social media showing him touching the spout of a soy sauce bottle at a major conveyor-belt sushi chain,

The arrest of Yuta Shinnishi is not his first for so-called “sushi terrorism,” reports TBS News.

In the latest incident, Shinnishi is accused of filming the stunt at a Hama-sushi branch in Saitama Prefecture on June 28. The viral social media post forced the restaurant to swap out its soy sauce bottles and disrupt its normal operations, leading to his arrest.

During police questioning on suspicion of obstructing business, Shinnishi partially denied the allegations. “There is no mistake that I posted the video, but I don’t know if my finger actually touched the soy sauce bottle,” he told investigators.

“Malicious nuisance behavior”

In a brazen display of repeat behavior, this is not Shinnishi’s first run-in with the law over restaurant sabotage. Just last month, he was arrested and summarily indicted on similar charges, which resulted in a summary order to pay a fine of 500,000 yen.

In that case, he filmed himself pouring a liquid — believed to be detergent — onto a tuna sushi dish he had ordered at a Hama-sushi location within the prefecture and posted the footage to social media.

The operator of Hama-sushi issued a statement following the arrest, condemning the latest incident. “We will continue to take a resolute stance in our response against malicious nuisance behavior,” the company said.
