Kabukicho ‘men’s concept cafe’ suspected of entertaining teenage girl

TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have busted a so-called “men’s concept cafe” in Shinjuku Ward for licensing violations.

According to TBS News (Jan. 23), Yoshiki Uehara, the manager of Smile, located in the Kabukicho red-light district, and owner Sho Oshikawa also entertained a teenage girl while knowing she was a minor.

On January 21, Uehara, 24, and Oshikawa, 40, are suspected of operating Smile without a license. Last April, they provided entertainment to the high school girl, then 17, while knowing that she was a minor.

During questioning, Oshikawa denied the allegations. Meanwhile, Uehara partially denied the charges about illegal operation of the a business and denied the allegation regarding the girl.

Male staff members at a men’s concept cafe serve primarily female customers. In this case, Uehara met the girl on social media, police said.

The cafe received guidance from the Tokyo police last November of last year for operating a business without a license. However, it continued to operate in the same way after that.
