TOKYO (TR) – Prosecutors have decided to not prosecute a Korean man over the alleged sexual assault of a female high school student at a university dormitory earlier this year, reports TV Asahi (Nov. 25).
On March 4, Shin Kang-hyun, 31, is alleged to have sexually assaulted the girl inside a room of a dormitory at Hitotsubashi University.
Upon his arrest on suspicion of non-consensual sexual intercourse in September, Shin partially denied the charges. “It’s true that I touched her, but I didn’t do anything more than that,” he said.
On Tuesday, the Tachikawa branch of the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office decided not to prosecute Shin. No reason for non-prosecution was disclosed.
At the time of the incident, the defendant was a student at the university. According to the Kodaira Police Station, Shin and the girl met through a language-learning app. She had previously expressed interest in learning Korean language and culture. Shin then suggested they meet in person.
On the day of the incident, the two had lunch together. Afterward, the defendant invited her to “see the university.” The alleged assault occurred in his room in the dormitory.
The girl and her mother lodged a report with police two days later. She graduated from the university that same month.
