TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a Vietnamese national on suspicion of hit-and-run after he caused a collision while fleeing from a police car earlier this year, reports Nippon News Network (Apr. 28).
Nguyen Anh Tuan, a former technical intern residing in Kasukabe City, Saitama Prefecture, is accused of rear-ending a vehicle and fleeing the scene in Suginami Ward.
According to investigative sources, a patrol car spotted Tuan driving a passenger vehicle with a maintenance defect in the Honan area this past January. When officers initiated a pursuit, Tuan sped off.

During the chase, Tuan crashed into another vehicle, leaving the male driver with minor injuries. Tuan’s vehicle overturned upon impact, but he abandoned the wreckage and fled on foot. Police were eventually able to track him down and identify him through an analysis of nearby security camera footage.
Investigators revealed that Tuan was overstaying an expired visa and did not have a driver’s license. Furthermore, the car he was driving had an expired inspection certificate (shaken) and lacked insurance.
Upon his arrest, Tuan admitted to the allegations. “My visa had expired and I was driving without a license,” he reportedly told police. “I just desperately wanted to get away.”
