TOKYO (TR) – In a display of reckless driving in Hachioji City, a white sedan was caught on dashcam footage overtaking a highway patrol vehicle by driving up onto the expressway’s side wall, reports TV Asahi (Apr. 23).
The incident, captured by both the front and rear cameras of a Central Nippon Highway Patrol Tokyo vehicle, begins with the sedan approaching rapidly from behind.
Footage shows the white car attempting a sudden lane change before disappearing from the rear camera’s view. An instant later, the front camera captures the unthinkable: rather than passing in a clear lane, the sedan overtakes the patrol car by riding up onto the concrete wall and guardrail.
The vehicle is seen violently tilted to one side, balancing precariously on the barrier as it speeds past the camera.
Stunned patrol workers inside the vehicle can be heard crying out, “Whoa!? Whoa!?” in disbelief as the car scrapes against the guardrail before returning to the road and speeding off.
The highway patrol company released the footage as a stark warning to motorists regarding the deadly consequences of erratic driving.
“The driver just happened to pass by without causing a major crash, but there was a severe risk of the car completely rolling over and overturning,” said Akiro Konishi, Deputy Manager of the General Affairs Section at Central Nippon Highway Patrol Tokyo. “We released this hoping it will encourage everyday safe driving.”
