Tokyo sex worker handed suspended term over dismemberment of corpse of newborn

TOKYO (TR) – A court here has handed a 22-year-old woman employed at sex establishment in Sumida Ward a suspended prison term over the dismemberment of her newborn last year, reports the Sankei Shimbun (Mar. 23).

At the Tokyo District Court on Monday, presiding judge Mika Aoki handed Rei Obara, an employee at the fuzuoku (commercial sex) entertainment parlor in Kotobashi, a two-year prison term, suspended for three years.

Judge Aoki said of Obara: “Her actions, committed without consulting anyone after facing the death of her baby, were selfish.”

The prosecution had sought a two-year prison term.

According to the ruling, Obara, dismembered the body of her newborn baby last March with a cutter and put the head and other body parts in the freezer at her workplace.

During the trial, she admitted to the charges.

Judge Aoki also stated, “She showed remorse by expressing her feelings for the baby.” The judge added, “It is necessary and appropriate to give her an opportunity for rehabilitation within society under the guidance and supervision of her mother and public institutions.”
