TOKYO (TR) – Ahead of the 30-year anniversary of the unsolved murder of a Sophia University student in Katsushika Ward, Tokyo Metropolitan Police have released a new 3D image of a suspicious man spotted near the crime scene, reports Nippon News Network (Sep. 4).
On September 9, 1996, Junko Kobayashi was murdered inside her home in the Shibamata district. Following the killing, the perpetrator set the residence on fire and fled.
Despite a massive investigative effort involving more than 120,000 police officers over the decades, the cold case remains unsolved as it approaches the three-decade mark.
In a renewed push for leads, police on Thursday unveiled newly created posters and a 3D rendering based on witness accounts. The image depicts a suspicious man seen in the vicinity of the home wearing an ochre-colored coat.
Investigators are urging the public to come forward with any tips. “We are asking for any information, no matter how trivial it may seem,” police said in a statement.
