TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly sneaking into the employee-only area of a convenience store and stealing cash from a clerk’s bag, reports Nippon News Network (Sep. 10).
Seita Sasaki is accused of trespassing into the back room of a convenience store in Tokyo’s Koto Ward last month. Once inside, he allegedly rifled through a female employee’s belongings and made off with 54,000 yen in cash.
Investigators believe Sasaki waited for the perfect moment to strike, slipping past the cash register and into the restricted area while the clerk was distracted serving customers.
Upon his arrest, Sasaki remained tight-lipped. In response to police questioning, he merely stated, “I will speak with a lawyer.”
However, police suspect this was far from an isolated incident. The Metropolitan Police Department is currently investigating Sasaki’s potential involvement in 10 similar thefts targeting convenience store back rooms across the capital.
