TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a doctor accused of abandoning bloody syringes and bottles of anesthetic inside a subway station toilet after allegedly injecting himself, reports the Sankei Shimbun (July 24).
According to police, Dr. Mitsuki Kimura, who lives in Edogawa Ward, is suspected of leaving eight used syringes and three bottles of anesthetic — weighing approximately 174 grams in total — in the men’s and multi-purpose toilets at Hamacho Station on the Toei Shinjuku Line on March 31.
Investigators found Kimura’s blood on the discarded needles. Police believe the suspect was using the station stalls to secretly inject himself with the medical-grade anesthetic.
“Judgment was impaired”
During questioning on suspicion of violating the Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act, Kimura admitted to using the drugs to achieve a sense of euphoria, but he denied the allegations of illegal dumping.
“My judgment was impaired by the drugs, so I did not discard them intentionally,” the suspect told investigators.
On the evening of March 31, police officers responded to an emergency call from a station employee reporting a man shouting that he was going to jump onto the tracks; the officers discovered the needles and other items inside the restroom and subsequently launched an investigation.
In a bizarre twist, Kimura also confessed to injecting himself with other unapproved medications, claiming the self-administration was strictly for “academic research purposes.”
Police are continuing their investigation, suspecting that the doctor may have repeatedly engaged in similar drug abuse in public facilities.
