Sri Lankan man accused or mugging woman in Jingumae

TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a male Sri Lankan over the alleged mugging of a woman in Shibuya Ward last month, reports TBS News (Jan. 8).

At around 3:30 a.m. on December 21, Jayatonga Arachichirage Danushka Sri Naamal Jayatonga, 30, allegedly covered the mouth of the woman, aged in her 30s, as she commuted home on a street in Jingumae.

“Cash,” he said before pushing her down and robbing her of her bag valued at 10,500 yen.

The woman suffered minor injuries to her hands, knees and neck, police said.

Upon his arrest on suspicion of robbery and assault, the suspect admitted to the allegations, police said.

Approximately 30 minutes prior to the crime, another woman in her 20s in the same area was nearly robbed of her bag by a perpetrator using a similar method.

Police are investigating whether the cases are related.
