Saitama group home director stole ¥10 million from vulnerable residents

SAITAMA (TR) – A care facility chief in Asaka City has been arrested after allegedly raiding the bank accounts of residents unable to manage their own finances, pocketing an estimated 10 million yen in total, reports Nippon News Network (Oct. 28).

Yoshiki Takayama, who served as director of the Asaka City facility, is suspected of withdrawing a total of 400,000 yen from the account of a male resident last year and pocketing the funds, according to police.

The group home had a policy of managing bank accounts and other financial assets on behalf of residents who were unable to do so themselves, upon the resident’s request, police said.

Investigators believe Takayama exploited that position of trust to help himself to client funds over an extended period.

The total damage is estimated to reach approximately ¥10 million, police said.

Takayama has admitted to the allegations. In questioning, he told investigators, ‘I had a desire to spend money on gambling, and I gave in to temptation,’ according to police.
