Saitama couple accused in fatal assault of woman

SAITAMA (TR) – Saitama Prefectural Police have arrested a man and his wife over the alleged fatal beating of a second woman at the residence they shared in Warabi City, reports NHK (July 4).

Between the night of July 2 and early the next day, Shuhei Yamai, 39, a part-time worker, and his wife, 31-year-old Ayaka, allegedly assaulted a 27-year-old female acquaintance by straddling her and tying her hands and feet with a belt.

Ayaka then noticed that the woman was unconscious and called emergency services. She was later confirmed dead at a hospital, police said.

When questioned, both suspects denied allegations of assault. Shuhei stated, “I was trying to help a violent woman.” Ayaka said, “It was not assault.”

The woman arrived at the residence about a week before the incident and lived with the couple, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
