TOKYO (TR) – An elderly male driver allegedly struck and killed a woman at a crossing in Machida City because he was distracted by a traffic light, police said on Thursday.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department is weighing charges of negligent driving resulting in death for a 71-year-old male driver who struck Tadamitsu Ishizaka, 61, who was walking across a crossing at an intersection on Monday, TBS News reports (Nov. 17).

Ishizaka died after she was rushed to a hospital with serious injuries including a broken pelvis, police said.

The male driver was quoted as telling police he was on his way home when he “didn’t notice the pedestrian because I got distracted by the traffic light ahead.”
