Motorcyclist survives 20 m plunge from Shuto Expressway into river


TOKYO (TR) – A male motorcyclist involved in an accident with a car on an expressway in Chuo Ward on Thursday survived a subsequent plunge into a river below, police said.

According to TBS News (Dec. 12), the 62-year-old motorcyclist was involved in an accident with a car changing lanes near the Edobashi Junction on the Shuto Expressway at just before 7 p.m.

The impact of the collision sent the motorcyclist off the deck of the expressway, causing him to plunge 20 meters into the water below.

The man managed to swim to shore on his own and was subsequently transported to a hospital. He was conscious and suffered minor injuries, police said.

The expressway near where the accident took place has a low side wall. Tokyo police are currently investigating the circumstances that led to the accident.
