Mixed martial arts fighter accused of attempting to rob Shibuya commuter

TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested two 21-year-old men, including a mixed martial arts fighter, for an attempted street robbery in Shibuya Ward earlier this year, reports Fuji News Network (June 18).

Ryuta Imamura, whose occupation is unknown, and Tatsuki Yoshida, who is unemployed, both residents of Saitama City, were taken into custody on suspicion of attempted robbery resulting in injury.

According to police, the incident occurred on a night in April. The suspects allegedly targeted a company employee in his 40s who was walking home along a street in the Shoto area of Shibuya.

The pair approached the victim from behind and placed him in a chokehold. During the assault, Imamura allegedly pinned the victim to the ground by straddling him and threatened, “Give me money or I’ll kill you.”

When the victim resisted the attack, Imamura and Yoshida, who acted as a lookout, fled the scene.

The duo is already familiar to investigators. Both men have been arrested and indicted twice before for a separate incident in April, in which they stole a cash card from a man in his 20s who was sleeping on a street in Shibuya.

During questioning regarding the latest charges, both suspects denied the allegations, telling police they “cannot remember” the incident.
