Mitsu Dan reveals she earned mere ¥330,000 for full-nude debut

TOKYO (TR) – Entertainer Mitsu Dan, 45, has sparked shock online after revealing she took home a paltry 330,000 yen for baring it all in her full-nude debut over a decade ago, reports evening tabloid Nikkan Gendai (Oct. 7).

Speaking on the YouTube program “K’s Tenki” in late September, the former gravure idol reflected on her starring role in the 2012 erotic film “Be My Slave” and its accompanying photobook.

“When I put myself on the auction block, my take-home pay was 330,000 yen,” Dan confessed. “I was just glad I could pay my rent. I was actually surprised I was worth 330,000 yen. I didn’t have the feeling of, ‘I did all this for a mere 330,000.'”

The revelation triggered an outpouring of sympathy on social media, with netizens calling the payout “too cheap” and saying they were “lost for words” over the exploitation.

“Wasn’t impossibly low”

However, an entertainment industry insider noted that while the figure is low, it was not completely abnormal for an unestablished talent at the time.

“Gross payments could be in the millions, but agencies typically take a 20 to 50 percent cut. After deducting various expenses, a take-home in the hundreds of thousands of yen was common,” the insider explained. “For a newcomer, 330,000 yen wasn’t impossibly low.”

Dan, who debuted in gravure at the unusually late age of 29 in 2010, has long been known for her gritty and unconventional resume. Before entering show business, she worked at a traditional Japanese sweets factory, hustled as a hostess at a Ginza club, and earned a license as an embalmer, working as an autopsy assistant in a university hospital’s forensic medicine department.

“Damaged goods”

Describing herself as “damaged goods” during her late-twenties debut, Dan said she originally viewed modeling as a fleeting memory. When the offer to go fully nude arrived, she consulted her mother, who urged her to take the plunge.

“If it benefits your career as a talent, try it. If it doesn’t, just quit. It’s up to you,” her mother reportedly told her, leading Mitsu to agree to a three-year trial period in the industry.

Industry standards have shifted since Mitsu’s breakthrough. Today, mid-level gravure idols can command between 1 and 3 million yen for similar work, while top-tier actresses might be offered over 10 million yen. However, the release of full-nude photobooks has sharply declined, making such lucrative offers increasingly rare.
