Man on bail over fatal high-speed crash arrested for stealing sneakers

TOCHIGI (TR) – Police here have arrested two men for burglary, including a 23-year-old suspect who was out on bail awaiting trial for a fatal high-speed crash, reports TBS News (June 25).

Sota Ishida, 23, and Erikishun Sato, 24, are accused of breaking into a residence in Ashikaga City in April of last year. The pair allegedly made off with sneakers and other items valued at approximately 14,000 yen.

Upon their arrest, both suspects admitted to the charges. “I stole them so I could wear them,” Ishida told investigators.

At the time of the burglary, Ishida was already out on bail facing a much more severe charge.

In 2023, he was arrested and indicted for dangerous driving resulting in death. Prosecutors allege Ishida was driving a car at 160 kilometers per hour in Utsunomiya City when he violently rear-ended a motorcycle, killing 63-year-old rider Kazumasa Sasaki. He was subsequently granted bail, during which time the burglary took place.

The revelation that Ishida was allegedly committing home burglaries while out on bail for her husband’s death drew outrage from the victim’s widow.

Speaking to reporters, Taeko Sasaki expressed her disgust over the latest arrest.

“It’s completely unbelievable, truly,” she said. “I have given up on ever getting a sincere apology from him. I don’t even want one anymore.”
