International relations: Man tries to rob international student using English

TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police are hunting for a man who attempted to rob an international student in Nakano Ward while speaking English, reports the Sankei Shimbun (Feb. 3).

At around 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, the would be intruder rang the intercom at the student’s apartment. When the student answered, the intruder head-butted him in the face.

The man then barged in with his shoes on and grabbed a kitchen knife. Though appearing to be Japanese, the intruder said in English: “Give me wallet.”

The male resident, questioned the reason in Japanese, “Nande?”

The intruder quickly switched his threats from English to Japanese: “Give me your wallet.”

The two then engaged in a scuffle. Upon seeing the male resident was injured, the intruder fled the scene still holding the knife but without having taken anything.

The victim suffered an injuries to his eyelid and fingers.

Police are seeking the whereabouts of the intruder on suspicion of robbery and assault.
