Filipino national suspected of climbing drainpipe to enter Shinjuku apartment for burglary

TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a man for breaking into an apartment in Shinjuku Ward in December and stealing approximately 3 million yen in cash and other items, reports Nippon News Network (Jan. 29).

To gain access, JonBenet Ayuste de la Pena, 28, used a drainpipe affixed to the exterior wall of the building to climb up to the third floor. He then entered the unit of a male resident from the balcony.

According to police, de la Pena stole approximately 3 million yen in cash, a luxury watch — valued at 2.4 million yen — and other items.

During questioning, de la Pena admitted to allegations of theft. “I committed the theft because I ran out of money due to gambling,” he said.

When de la Pena entered, a window on the balcony was unlocked. Police believe he knew the layout of the building beforehand since he previously lived there.

Police are also aware of a similar case that took place on the second floor. They are investigating the possibility that de la Pena was also involved in that incident.
