TOKYO (TR) – The former head of the National Police Agency’s Cyber Investigation Division has been dismissed after embezzling over 1.7 million yen in public funds to spend on his mistress, authorities announced last week, reports Fuji News Network (Sep. 10).
Tsutomu Igai, 55, was slapped with a disciplinary dismissal for defrauding the agency of approximately 1.73 million yen between 2022 and April of this year.
During overseas business trips, the former division head routinely inflated expenses and submitted fictitious billing claims. The fraudulent charges were disguised as rewards for investigative informants and networking expenses with foreign security agencies.
In connection with the financial scandal, Tokyo Metropolitan Police has referred Igai to prosecutors on suspicion of fraud and breach of trust.
According to the NPA, Igai funneled the stolen taxpayer money into general living expenses and dating costs with a woman with whom he was having an extramarital affair.
During questioning, the disgraced police chief admitted to the allegations, telling investigators, “I wanted money that I could spend freely.”
