Elderly Okayama couple found dead in suspected murder-suicide

OKAYAMA (TR) – Police in Okayama City have launched an investigation into a suspected murder-suicide after an elderly couple was found dead inside their home last week.

Shuichi Doi, 89, and his 84-year-old wife, Masako, were discovered deceased at their residence in Minami Ward following a wellness check on May 1.

At approximately 3:20 p.m., a care manager attending to Masako alerted authorities after noticing a concerning irregularity. “The delivered bento meals haven’t been taken inside since yesterday,” the caller told police.

Officers arriving at the property made found their bodies. Masako was found lifeless on a bed in a first-floor bedroom. Shuichi was discovered collapsed in a first-floor hallway with a rope wrapped around his neck.

A subsequent autopsy determined that Masako died from asphyxiation. Given the foul play indicators, investigators suspect she was strangled and are treating the incident as a likely murder-suicide perpetrated by her husband.
