Drunk Tokyo cop who stole bicycle: ‘I wanted to go home early and sleep’

TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have suspended a male police sergeant for allegedly stealing a bicycle in Chiba Prefecture and trying to pedal home while intoxicated, reports TV Asahi (June 21).

On Friday, the department imposed a three-month suspension on the unnamed sergeant, 30, from the Shibuya Police Station. However, he chose to resign the same day. He was referred to prosecutors last month.

In May, the sergeant drank six medium-sized mugs of beer and one cup of sake with colleagues at a restaurant before attempting to catch a train home.

However, he overslept at JR Nishi-Funabashi Station and stole a bicycle from a bicycle parking lot near the station.

The station is located about seven kilometers from his home in Tokyo. Part of the way there, he was stopped and questioned because he had no lights on. During that inquiry, he was found to be riding under the influence of alcohol.

The sergeant said, “I wanted to go home early and sleep. I didn’t want to walk home.”
