TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a Colombian national accused of making off with 39 million yen worth of diamonds and other precious gems during a jewelry exhibition earlier this year, reports Nippon News Network (Sep. 14).
Ernesto Gutierrez Torres is suspected of stealing a rolling suitcase containing 137 pieces of jewelry, including diamonds and rubies, during an event at Tokyo Big Sight in Koto Ward this July, according to police.
Upon his arrest, Gutierrez Torres denied the allegations, police said.
Investigators allege the theft occurred as a vendor was preparing to close up shop for the day. The store clerk had already packed the jewelry into a carry-on case, but became momentarily distracted while attending to a customer.
During this brief window, Gutierrez Torres allegedly snatched the entire suitcase and its massive jewelry haul, fleeing the scene.
