Chiba nurses fired over unauthorized videos of bedridden patients, complaining of being “bored”

CHIBA (TR) – Two female nurses at a hospital in Matsudo City have been dismissed after taking unauthorized videos of bedridden patients and posting the footage to social media with captions complaining about their shift, reports the Sankei Shimbun (Oct. 11).

The incident occurred during a night shift on October 5 at Tokushukai Chiba Nishi General Hospital in Matsudo. According to the hospital, the two nurses filmed hospitalized patients lying in their beds and took selfies on the ward. The footage was then uploaded to social media accompanied by mocking captions such as “Seriously bored” and “This is boring.”

The hospital announced on October 10 that both nurses had been handed disciplinary dismissals. A third female nurse who viewed the posts within a private group received a strict reprimand.

“Content that is completely unacceptable for anyone involved in medical care was posted on social media. We offer our deepest and most sincere apologies,” Hospital Director Kazuo Misumi stated on the facility’s website.

By October 9, the hospital had directly apologized to the families of the patients whose privacy was violated and reported the breach to the city and local health authorities.

In the wake of the scandal, the hospital stated it will implement strict training sessions regarding personal information protection and the appropriate use of social media to prevent future occurrences.
