KAGOSHIMA (TR) – Police in Izumi City have arrested a 36-year-old American man for overstaying his visa after he walked into a local police station claiming he was broke and homeless, Minaminihon Broadcasting (Oct. 11).
The suspect, of no fixed address and self-proclaimed unemployed, appeared at the Izumi Police Station at around 7:00 p.m. on the 10th. Speaking in broken Japanese, he told officers, “I have no money and nowhere to stay.”
When officers asked to see his passport to assist him, they discovered his authorized period of stay in Japan had expired in January. He was arrested on the spot on suspicion of violating the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act.
According to police, the man entered Japan via Saga Airport in October of last year.
Upon questioning, the suspect readily admitted to the allegations. “I was traveling around various places in the country,” he told investigators. “I knew my visa had expired, but I didn’t want to go back to America.”
Police are currently investigating his activities over the past several months and the circumstances that led him to Kagoshima.
