Victim in alleged assault by Hokkaido taxi driver dies

HOKKAIDO (TR) – A man injured in the alleged assault by a male taxi driver in Sapporo City earlier this week has died, police said on Friday, reports Hokkaido Television Broadcasting (May 23).

At around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, taxi driver Yasuo Omi, 75, is suspected of punching Mikio Okamoto, 69, in the face on a street in Shiroishi Ward.

Okamoto was unconscious upon being transported to a hospital. However, he died on Friday, police confirmed.

Upon the arrest of Omi, who lives in Kiyota Ward, he admitted to the allegations. “I dropped him with one blow,” he said.

Road rage

At the time of the incident, Okamoto was also driving a vehicle. According to police, Omi got into a dispute with Okamoto on the street. The incident took place after they got out of their vehicles.

Police are looking into the cause of Okamoto’s death and will continue their investigation with an eye on charges of manslaughter.
