TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police on Tuesday announced the arrest of a pair of suspects, both Chinese females, aged 27 and 30, who are believed to have robbed multiple drunken users of automatic teller machines, reports TBS News (Nov. 11).
On June 28, one suspect is alleged to have distracted a 49-year-old office worker from Chiba Prefecture by kissing him while the other stole 200,000 yen in cash that he had just withdrawn from an ATM at a convenience store in Taito Ward’s Ueno district.
According to public broadcaster NHK (Nov. 11), an additional one million yen was withdrawn in 200,000-yen incremements from the same victim’s account at a different convenience store in the area on the same day.
The victim has no recollection of the additional withdrawals due to intoxication, police said.
The two suspects have reportedly denied the allegations.
Investigators believe members of Chinese groups have used similar tactics to rob more than 850 victims in the same area of 300 million yen since 2012.
