TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested four male exchange students from Mongolia suspected in a number of thefts, reports Nippon News Network (Mar. 11).

In the early morning hours of February 14, the suspects, including one 20-year-old, entered an unlocked apartment in the Roppongi area of Minato Ward and stole nine items valued at 60,000 yen.

One of the suspects denies the allegations, while the three others admit to the charges. “I did it to cover living expenses,” one of the suspects is quoted by police, according to TV Asahi (Mar. 11).

The four suspects, all of whom arrived in Japan last fall to study the Japanese language, accessed the apartment building by accessing its exterior stairwell from an adjacent building.

Police believe that the suspects have been involved in 10 similar robberies in which the value of lost items totals 500,000 yen.
