TOKYO (TR) – Investigative sources with the Tokyo Metropolitan Police revealed on Tuesday that the smartphone of a 24-year-old woman whose former boyfriend faces charges in her death has been found in a river, reports TBS News (Nov. 15).

On Monday, police working off information provided by Keitaro Saga, 50, found the smartphone belonging to Shiori Nakamoto beneath a bridge of the Arakawa River at the border of Toda City, Saitama Prefecture and Tokyo’s Itabashi Ward.

Using the serial number on the phone, police confirmed that the item belongs to Nakamoto.

Saga, a resident of Kawaguchi City, Saitama Prefecture, has admitted to killing Nakamoto two months ago. On the night of September 16, Saga apprehended Nakamoto at her residence in Tokyo’s Meguro Ward.

Saga told police that he stabbed her with a fruit knife after they got into a fight over an unpaid loan he had extended to her. “I then cut up her body with a saw,” the suspect was quoted in a previous report. “I scattered parts of the body in a river and sent others down a drain in her apartment in dumping it.”

In October, police initially arrested Saga on charges of abandoning a corpse. Based on Saga’s testimony, police began searching the Arakawa River and the Tone River in Noda City, Chiba Prefecture.

Also on Tuesday, Saga was prosecuted at the Tokyo District Court on charges of destruction of a corpse.
