TOCHIGI (TR) – Tochigi Prefectural Police have arrested a 66-year-old man who is alleged to have stolen a safe containing nearly seven million yen in cash. He then then purchased a luxury automobile, reports TBS News (Oct. 7).

In January, Masao Okano is alleged to have trespassed into a residence in Kanuma City and stole a safe with 6.8 million yen in cash and a piece of jewelry.

Okano, who has been charged with theft, admits to the allegations. “I bought a BMW with the stolen money,” the suspect is quoted by police. “I also used it for living expenses.”

The suspect committed the alleged theft with a male partner, 41, who is already under prosecution for the crime. The two men met while in prison at the same time. After they were released, they began committing burglaries together.
