Suspect in Shinjuku stabbing had ongoing marital problems

TOKYO (TR) — A 58-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after she stabbed a female acquaintance at a hotel restaurant in Shinjuku Ward last week had ongoing marital problems, police said.

Aiko Kobayashi, whose occupation is unverified, was taken into custody at the scene on the night of April 10, reports TBS News (April 11).

According to police, the incident occurred at approximately 9:00 p.m. Kobayashi allegedly attempted to kill the victim by suddenly stabbing her with a knife at a first-floor restaurant inside the Rihga Royal Hotel.

At the time of the attack, Kobayashi, her husband, and the victim had been sharing a meal together.

Upon her arrest, Kobayashi offered a vague response to investigators, stating, “I don’t remember the reason.”

The targeted woman sustained severe injuries requiring an unknown recovery time, while the male companion also suffered minor injuries.

Authorities suspect the violent outburst was fueled by an ongoing dispute concerning Kobayashi’s marital relationship. Police confirmed that they had previously received consultations regarding trouble between the parties involved.

Police are continuing to investigate the details leading up to the stabbing.
