Pair nabbed over theft of safe containing ¥100 million in Osaka

OSAKA (TR) – Osaka Prefectural Police on Monday arrested two men for breaking into an apartment building in Sayama City and stealing a safe containing approximately 100 million yen in cash last year, reports the NHK (May 27).

Last August, Jo Ochiai, 23, and Takeshi Tamura, 34, allegedly broke into a unit of the building and stole a safe containing the approximately 100 million yen in cash and six commemorative coins.

Police have not revealed whether the two suspects admit to the charges.

According to police, a woman occupies the unit. At a little after noon on the day of the incident, the victim locked her door and went out to have lunch. When she returned home about an hour later, she noticed that the safe was missing from the space and called police.

Roughly one month after the incident, Ochiai was arrested in Osaka City’s Taisho Ward over his alleged involvement in a hit-and-run incident. At the time, he had more than 20 million yen in cash in his car, which led to an investigation.

Police used security camera footage to link the suspects to the theft.

There was no signs of the residence having been broken into. As well, the safe was stolen in a short period of time, suggesting that the two men were aware of the presence of the large amount of cash in the safe beforehand.
