NAGASAKI (TR) – Two sisters died after their car drove off a wharf in Nagasaki City and plunged into the sea, police said on Thursday, reports the Mainichi Shimbun (Mar. 9).
At around 3:20 a.m., police received a tip about a “vehicle that plunged into the sea” from the wharf, located in the town of Kogura City.
Chiharu Nakao, 47, and her sister, 44-year-old Yukari, were retrieved from the vehicle by emergency personnel at a depth of about six meters. They were both transported to a nearby hospital where they were later confirmed dead.
Chihara was found in the driver’s seat while Yukari was in the back. According to NHK (Mar. 9), Yukari telephoned their father, aged in his 70s, at some point to inform him about the vehicle plunging into the sea. He then alerted emergency services.
According to the Oura Police Station, there was no indication that the breaks of the vehicle had been applied on the wharf.
Police are now attempting to determine the cause of the vehicle’s plunge from the wharf. They are treating the case as the result of foul play or an accident.
