Hokkaido girl, 17, suspected of leaving corpse of newborn in bag after giving birth

HOKKAIDO (TR) – Hokkaido Prefectural Police last week arrested a 17-year-old girl for allegedly leaving the body of her newborn on the grounds of a house in Ishikari City earlier this year, reports TBS News (May 25).

On April 13, the unclothed body of the boy was found in a bag left on the grounds of the house.

Based on security camera footage, police allege that the girl, a part-time employee living in the city, abandoned the baby’s body between late March this year and day of the discovery.

The results of DNA testing confirmed that the girl is the mother of the boy.

Upon her arrest on suspicion of abandoning a corpse on May 23, she admitted to the allegations. “I gave birth, but I couldn’t tell my parents and I didn’t know what to do,” she said.

The girl had not been issued a maternal and child health handbook. Police are now investigating the circumstances that led to the incident.
