Brazilian man found wandering on Shinkansen railway accused of punching cop

SHIZUOKA — A 39-year-old Brazilian man who sparked chaos by trespassing on the Tokaido Shinkansen tracks last week has been slapped with a fresh arrest warrant after assaulting a police officer while in custody, reports Shizuoka TV (Apr. 14).

The unemployed resident of Higashihiroshima City was re-arrested on Tuesday morning on suspicion of obstructing an officer in the line of duty.

According to the Shizuoka Central Police Station, the suspect suddenly struck a 36-year-old male officer from the detention management division in the shoulder at around 10:00 a.m. while being held at the station. The officer did not sustain injuries in the scuffle.

During police questioning, the suspect readily admitted to the allegations, telling investigators, “There is no doubt I hit him.”

The Brazilian national was originally taken into custody on April 7 after wandering onto the bullet train tracks at JR Shizuoka Station.

Bizarrely, he attempted to justify his dangerous actions to responding officers at the time by claiming he was fleeing for his life, stating, “I am being chased by yakuza.”

Police are now investigating the exact sequence of events and motives that led to his sudden violent outburst inside the holding cell.
