NIIGATA (TR) – Niigata Prefectural Police said on Monday that it has received a report over the discovery of approximately 18 million yen in cash and a search for the owner is underway, reports the Yomiuri Shimbun (Dec. 8).
According to the Niigata-Kita Police Station, a business in Niigata City reported the discovery of approximately 18 million yen in cash in November, claiming that it had been found among trash.
Police waited for the owner to come forward, but when they did not, they announced the discovery on Monday. To prevent theft, police stated that they could not disclose the circumstances under which the cash was found.
Police plan to keep the cash as lost property for three months while they search for its owner.
According to prefectural police, this is the highest amount of cash found in the prefecture since statistics began being kept in 2018.
In a separate case, the Niigata-Kita Police Station filed a report over the discovery of approximately 8 million yen in cash in June 2023.
This cash was also found among the waste of a business in Niigata City. When the owner did not come forward within three months, the entire amount was handed over to the person who reported it to the police.
Found items remain the property of the owner for three months after a report is lodged by the finder. If the finder does not claim the lost property after that period, it becomes prefectural revenue.
