CAMBODIA (TR) – Cambodian authorities on Tuesday detained approximately 800 people, including Japanese nationals, at a building in the southern part of the nation. It is believed to be the base of operations for a fraud ring, reports TBS News (Feb. 12).
According to Cambodian authorities, the detained 800 persons are from seven countries, including Japan, China and the United States.
The raid was conducted at a casino facility in Sihanoukville. Approximately 650 computers and 1,000 mobile phones were also seized from the base.
The location is believed to be a base of operation for tokushu sagi, or specialized fraud. Such a fraud is carried out on the telephone by a caller impersonating an authority figure or a relative.
The Japanese Embassy in Cambodia stated that it is “confirming the facts” of the matter.
A large-scale crackdown is ongoing in Cambodia, where international fraud bases operated by Chinese criminal organizations and others are scattered. The government has said that it aims to “eradicate them by April.”
