PHILIPPINES (TR) – A local court has sentenced a former Philippine mayor suspected of being a “Chinese spy” to life imprisonment for her involvement in human trafficking.
The person sentenced to life imprisonment is Alice Guo, former mayor of the town of Bamban.
According to local media, Guo was accused of being involved in the operation of a Chinese fraud hub in the city and trafficking foreigners into participating in the fraud.
Although Guo has consistently denied the charges, a court in the capital, Manila, sentenced her to life imprisonment on on Thursday, finding “there is no doubt that she engaged in human trafficking.”
While mayor, Guo falsely claimed to be a Filipino citizen. However, authorities later identified her as Chinese national Guo Hua Ping.
