TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police on Friday raided the office of an organized crime group in Kabukicho red-light district of Shinjuku Ward in connection with a fraud case, reports the Mainichi Shimbun (Oct. 9).
At approximately 10:35, officers entered the office of the Daisho-kai, an affiliate gang of the Sumiyoshi-kai, in search of evidence related to the alleged swindling of an 84-year-old woman residing in Chiba out of 1.5 million yen in June of last year.
Makoto Kawano, a 40-year-old member of the Daisho-kai, was arrested after he posed as the woman’s son and requested money to replace a promissory note he left on a train.
Kawano was the leader of a fraud group in the Kanto area that collected at least 10 million yen using similar methods.
In September of last year, police raided the Daisho-kai office in connection with the sale of drugs to musician Aska.. The singer told police that he had purchased illegal substances from the “Shinjuku Pharmacy,” which is a reference to the office.
